Air testing can be very inaccurate and may give a false positive which could lead to a remediation project causing thousands of dollars.  Surface and dust sampling is far more accurate and is used exclusively for those with compromised immune systems and/or Lyme Disease. Surface or dust sampling will give you a history of your home, not just a snapshot.

However, do not assume you have to test for mold if you think you can see mold or you think you are smelling mold.  Sometimes you do not have mold.  Also, there are industry guidelines to properly remediate mold and these guidelines do not always recommend testing. Most importantly, you must determine what has caused the mold growth.

Mold only grows because the conditions exist for its growth – water, food, and the correct temperature range.  If you take away one of these, mold stops growing.  Normally water or moisture is the catalyst that causes the mold growth.  We can find it. 

Be aware that there are a number of mold testing and/or remediation companies that are not certified and take advantage of the consumer.  They use the paranoia and fear that surrounds “mold” to “scare” you into spending a lot of money for testing that could be better spent determining what has caused the mold and correcting the problem.

In case we determine that mold testing is advisable from the results of our investigation,  we recommend that you use a local IAQA Environmental Professional to perform that task. Or, we can perform a simple test, called an Indoor Mycometer Surface Sample, (which gives a relative moldiness score with no identification of the types of mold) or the more expensive HERTSMI or ERMI tests which will tell you what types of mold you have and at what levels.  These test are much cheaper and more accurate than air quality testing.
